Transfer news: Ex-Marseille defender Éric Bailly joins Real Oviedo

On Monday, August 18, Real Oviedo officially announced the signing of Éric Bailly, bringing the experienced Ivorian defender back to Spanish football. The former Olympique de Marseille centre-back arrives as a free agent, hoping to revive his career in the Segunda División.

Bailly joined OM in the summer of 2022 under Igor Tudor and initially impressed with his aggressive style and physical strength. Many believed he could establish himself as a defensive pillar in Ligue 1. However, his adventure in France was soon derailed by a lengthy suspension in the French Cup and a series of injuries, which tarnished his Marseille experience.

Following that turbulent spell, the Ivorian international looked to relaunch his career abroad. He played for Besiktas in Turkey and later at Villarreal, the Spanish club where he had first gained recognition back in 2015 before moving to Manchester United. While these stints showed glimpses of his quality, they lacked the continuity he had hoped for.

Now, at 30, Bailly embraces a fresh challenge with Real Oviedo. The Spanish side, aiming for promotion and stability, will benefit from the defender’s high-level experience across the Premier League, Ligue 1, and European competitions. For Bailly, this move is more than just another transfer: it represents an opportunity to bring leadership, resilience, and his proven defensive qualities to a team determined to grow in Spanish football.
