CAF 2025 rankings: Who truly rules african football?

The latest African club ranking by CAF, released on August 8, 2025, has reshaped the hierarchy of continental football. This list, based on performances over the past five seasons in interclub competitions, sets the benchmark for seeding at major tournaments.

Unsurprisingly, clubs from North and Southern Africa stand tall at the top. Al Ahly of Egypt leads convincingly with 78 points, reaffirming its status as the continent’s football powerhouse after securing three Champions League titles in the period. South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns (62 points) claims second spot ahead of Tunisia’s iconic Espérance de Tunis (57 points). Moroccan side RS Berkane, with two CAF Cup victories in five years, grabs fourth place, highlighting Morocco’s rapid rise.

The CAF rankings also highlight regional diversity: Simba SC (Tanzania), Zamalek SC (Egypt), Wydad AC (Morocco), USM Alger and CR Belouizdad (Algeria) all feature in the continental top 10. Algeria is notable for the number of clubs it places in the Top 50, while Morocco impresses with quality and consistent performances.

This ranking underlines a relative decline for teams from Central and West Africa, such as DR Congo’s TP Mazembe, which now sits outside the Top 10 as Congolese clubs struggle in recent group stages. Conversely, clubs like Horoya AC and SOAR Academy in Guinea are climbing, aiming to challenge the continent’s giants.

The CAF 2025 club ranking will directly influence club allocations for upcoming interclub competitions—an evolving dynamic that confirms the dominance of the usual giants yet gives hope to rising contenders. For every club, this means greater prestige, financial stakes, and international exposure.
