Benjamin Bouchouari: from Saint-Étienne to Lyon, the transfer shaking up the Rhône!

Benjamin Bouchouari, the Moroccan international midfielder for AS Saint-Étienne, has become the focal point of this summer’s transfer window. While a move to Turkey’s Trabzonspor seemed all but sealed, Olympique Lyonnais have entered the race, shaking up expectations. With only one year left on his contract, the 23-year-old is no longer part of ASSE’s plans following their relegation, and talks with Lyon could result in one of this summer’s most eye-catching moves.

Such a transfer would send shockwaves throughout the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The historic rivalry between ASSE and OL makes this move especially explosive—there hasn’t been a direct switch like this since Bafétimbi Gomis in 2009. Despite local tensions, Saint-Étienne now seem resigned to cashing in, with Bouchouari reportedly having given his approval for a Lyon move, according to several sources.

For Lyon, the midfield overhaul is well underway. With the arrivals of Tyler Morton from Liverpool (for an estimated €10M) and Czech playmaker Pavel Sulc already confirmed, Paulo Fonseca’s side is deepening its squad with technical prowess and international experience. Adding Bouchouari would further boost versatility and dynamism, especially after he secured a bronze medal with Morocco at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

While final negotiations remain between Lyon and Saint-Étienne, both financial and sporting stakes are now driving the deal. ASSE, unable to keep their player without a fresh contract, hopes to maximize the transfer fee, estimated at €5-6M. One thing is certain: the Bouchouari saga continues to ignite the market, promising headlines on both sides of the Rhône.
