Ibrahima Wadji poised for much-anticipated Azerbaijan comeback

Free since July 1, 2025, Senegalese striker Ibrahima Wadji is set to return to the Azerbaijani league, where he previously enjoyed great success with Qarabag FK. After a challenging spell at AS Saint-Étienne, this potential move promises a fresh start for the forward.

After three seasons in France, including two at AS Saint-Étienne, Ibrahima Wadji is close to confirming a comeback in Azerbaijan. The 30-year-old forward became a free agent on July 1, 2025, and is expected to sign with an Azerbaijani club, most likely Qarabag FK, where he already impressed during the 2021-2022 season.

Signed by Saint-Étienne in summer 2022 for around €1 million, Wadji initially raised expectations with 12 goals in Ligue 2, helping to keep the club from relegation. However, the following Ligue 1 season proved tough, as he failed to score or assist in 10 appearances, significantly diminishing his impact on the pitch.

In Azerbaijan, Qarabag FK, the likely suitor, looks to reignite his form. The club finished fourth last season and is gearing up for another UEFA Champions League qualifying campaign. Bringing back Wadji, who scored 20 goals in 36 games for Qarabag, is seen as key to strengthening their attack under a coach eager to see him thrive again in a familiar setting.

For Wadji, the transfer is more than just a change in club; it’s a strategic chance to revive his career where he remains a fan favorite and enjoys strong confidence.

This return could mark a significant turning point, offering the striker a valuable comeback opportunity after a difficult period in France and the chance to compete again on the European stage. With talks reportedly well advanced, fans eagerly await the official announcement.
