RC Lens is undergoing a significant squad reshuffle this summer, and a major casualty could be last year’s high-profile signing, Moroccan international Anass Zaroury. Signed from Burnley for over €5M, Zaroury arrived with big expectations but ultimately struggled to deliver, contributing just two goals and three assists in 28 Ligue 1 appearances, despite showing glimpses of his skill.
The appointment of Pierre Sage as manager has done little to change Zaroury’s fortunes. Even during pre-season, he has failed to impress and looks increasingly out of favor in the new coach’s plans due to inconsistent performances and difficulties in adapting to the evolving system.
As a result, Lens is not ruling out a departure for Zaroury, especially given his significant salary and market value of around €8M. Clubs in England’s Championship—Coventry City and Norwich—as well as Panathinaikos and Espanyol Barcelona, are closely monitoring his situation. Though under contract until 2028, Zaroury now symbolizes a missed opportunity for Lens, whose leadership is open to selling if a suitable offer arises.
While Zaroury continues pre-season training in England with the squad, his future at Lens appears increasingly doubtful. The club’s aggressive overhaul seems to leave little room for patience, and Zaroury may soon find himself departing in search of a fresh start this summer.
