Nigerian central defender Chidozie Awaziem is back at FC Nantes seven years after his first stint. Transferred from Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids, he commits until 2028 to strengthen Nantes’ defense in Ligue 1.
FC Nantes officially announced on Thursday, July 23, 2025, the return of 28-year-old Chidozie Awaziem to their squad. The Nigerian defender, who previously played for Nantes during the 2017-2018 season, joins the Canaries again after a tenure with the Colorado Rapids in MLS. Awaziem signed a three-year contract running until June 2028, highlighting Nantes’ intent to reinforce their backline for the upcoming campaigns.
Originally on loan at Nantes in 2017-2018, Awaziem made 23 appearances and scored once, quickly becoming an integral part of the team. Since then, he has gained vast international experience playing in Spain, Turkey, Croatia, Portugal, and the United States. Internationally, Awaziem has earned 34 caps for Nigeria, participating in the 2018 World Cup and multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
The transfer fee was not disclosed by Nantes, but this move clearly aims to bolster the defense. Awaziem expressed his emotional connection to the club: “For me, Nantes feels like home. The club is fantastic, and I am eager to help the team achieve its goals, win trophies, and return to the top”. This signing comes amid a period of financial scrutiny in French football, underscored by recent developments around clubs like Lyon and the DNCG. Bringing back an experienced player such as Awaziem could be vital both for sporting success and defensive stability.
