After a mixed loan spell at Olympique de Marseille, Ismaël Bennacer returns to AC Milan, but his future remains uncertain. With interest from Saudi giants Al-Ittihad, Fiorentina eager to bring him back, and other European clubs circling, the 27-year-old midfielder faces a pivotal 2025/26 season.
After a six-month loan with Olympique de Marseille marked by injury and inconsistent impact, the Phocaean club decided not to trigger the €12 million purchase option. Although Marseille remains interested in re-signing Bennacer, they aim to renegotiate the terms, as talks with AC Milan are currently stalled over transfer fee and salary demands.
Bennacer, a local boy and passionate Marseille supporter, cannot afford to stay benched at Milan, especially with the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) six months away and the 2026 World Cup less than a year off.
A major new player has entered the fray: **Al-Ittihad**, the Saudi club where Karim Benzema plays. According to Fabrizio Romano, the club has opened official talks with AC Milan to acquire Bennacer, who is one of several midfield targets alongside players like Wendel from Zenit. This move aligns with the broader Saudi strategy of recruiting high-profile players.
Meanwhile, **Fiorentina** and coach Stefano Pioli, who previously coached Bennacer at Milan, are also keen to sign him, potentially offering a stable platform in Serie A.
AC Milan, now managed by sporting director Igli Tare and coach Massimiliano Allegri, prefers a permanent sale to another loan, especially after bolstering their midfield with Luka Modrić.
Other clubs, including Spain’s Real Betis – offering Europa League football – are also interested but await Milan’s decisions. At 27, Bennacer faces a career-defining summer: to cement his place in top European football or pursue a lucrative contract in Saudi Arabia. The next few weeks will be crucial for the Algerian international’s future.
